Not Your Average Snow Globe: How We Built an IoT Holiday Showpiece

Not Your Average Snow Globe: How We Built an IoT Holiday Showpiece

Every December, our team looks for a creative side project to flex our skills and celebrate the season. Last year, we went all-in: designing and assembling a custom, IoT-enabled snow globe powered by in-house 3D printing and Bluetooth connectivity.

What Made It "Smart"? The IoT Features

Our snow globes weren't just decorative — they were interactive.

We didn't want to settle for a simple light-up globe (boring). We wanted something that responded, played music, lit up with holiday flair, and looked great doing it. So we turned to a favorite off-the-shelf solution: the Adafruit Circuit Playground, a compact Arduino-based board packed with features — 10 addressable neopixels, gyroscope, accelerometer, piezo speaker, Bluetooth, WiFi support. Perfect for a quick-turn, high-impact prototype.

Bluetooth & LED Control

We wanted full control over the globe — from color to lighting sequences — and we needed to move fast. So we turned to one of our favorite tools: Flutter, our go-to cross-platform framework. It let us build a multi-platform app that could interact with the globe seamlessly across iOS, Android, and the web — which was super important for a holiday project with a short runway.

Thanks to our experience with connected solutions (like uGen's smart physical therapy devices), we rapidly integrated Bluetooth functionality and a custom UI.

The result?

  • Beautiful snow animations
  • A 3D-rendered version of the printed snow globe model
  • Real-time color changes and fade effects
  • Shake-to-play music interaction

You could control the entire experience from your phone or browser — all it took was a tap or click to bring the snow globe to life.

Streaming Christmas Cheer

The Circuit Playground's piezo-electric speaker isn't exactly concert-quality — it can only output one tone at a time for a set duration. So we got clever.

We built a script that converted MIDI files into the Arduino-compatible code needed to "play" songs. Our very first test? The Legend of Zelda treasure chest sound effect — because, of course we did. 🎮

We created a dynamic data structure that we could send via our custom Bluetooth spec, passing in a songId that matched our hardcoded playlist. Tracks included holiday classics, the Silicon Valley theme song, and yes — the Zelda theme.

Creating Connected Experiences, from Start to Finish

Most agencies can design an app. Some can build a product. But at Innovative Owl Technology, we do it all. We're an end-to-end technology and creative agency, which means we don't just bring ideas to life — we help them get noticed, too. From custom hardware and full-stack development to branding and launch strategy, our team connects every dot.

This snow globe is a great example: built in-house by our hardware engineers, coded by our devs, and brought to life with a little creativity.

What We Learned (and What's Next)

This holiday project challenged us to:

  • Design a custom enclosure and 3D print it
  • Develop a cross-platform web app with real-time controls
  • Think holistically — from electronics to UX

Some of our biggest takeaways:

  • Flutter was a fantastic framework for fast, beautiful UI and cross-platform support.
  • The Circuit Playground gave us a fast path to functional hardware. Now we're experimenting with designing our own custom boards.
  • Our Bluetooth protocol is dynamic — ready to handle more commands and features as we grow.
  • Our final snow globes made a lasting impression on some of our favorite local spots — like Johnny's Little Bar and Masthead — who are still proudly displaying them, even in the middle of summer.

We're already dreaming up the next wave of functionality: WiFi connectivity, USB-C support for all-day power, weather-based lighting animations, enhanced glitter effects, and larger "snowflakes" powered by an internal fan.

Have a Wild Idea? Let's Build It
