Tips for Humor in Advertising

When we say "Where's the Beef?" what do you think of? Probably the classic Wendy's campaign from the 1980s. Or Clydesdales playing football? You (hopefully) think of Budweiser. Humor cuts through boundaries of culture, age, and gender, and fosters emotional connections. Used correctly, it gets people talking and creates favorable associations with viewers.

Know Your Audience

Understanding your target demographic in depth is the key to effective comedy in advertising. What makes them laugh? What are their pain points? Make sure your humor speaks to their issues, values, and interests. Tech-savvy millennials may respond to clever meme humor; an older, traditional audience may prefer a more subtle, conventional approach.

Be Authentic

Authenticity is crucial. Insincerity can be easily detected and harm your brand's reputation. Make sure your comedy fits the personality, values, and overarching messaging of your company. Humor can help you stand out in a crowded market — but only when it sounds like you.

Keep It Relevant and Timely

Successful comedy depends on being timely and relevant. Tie your humor to current affairs or popular culture. When the lights went out during the 2013 Super Bowl, Oreo capitalized on Twitter: "Power out? No problem. You can still dunk in the dark." It got attention and demonstrated Oreo's ability to react in real time.

Strike a Balance

Don't overuse humor to the point where the call-to-action or message is obscured. Geico's "Gecko" campaign is a good model: the character's repartee engages viewers while effectively communicating the brand's value.

Test, Test, and Test Again

Iteration is essential. Conduct focus groups, collect feedback, monitor analytics. Analyze the forms of comedy your audience finds most appealing and change technique as needed. Keep an open mind — what's funny today might not be funny tomorrow.

Humor done well engages people in a positive way and leaves them feeling good about your brand. Know your audience, stay real, stay current, strike a balance, and keep refining. A well-placed joke can distinguish your business in a crowded market.
